The answer is simple. Brass shells have been a favourite among drummers for many years due to their sound, response, and aesthetics. Unlike other shell materials, Brass offers an incredibly versatile and balanced sound with open highs, mids and lows. Perfect for louder genres like rock and metal, Brass is renowned for being quite loud. Although loud, you can just about use a brass snare in any style if you really want to cut through.
Brass shells offer a much darker tone than other metals and has a focused low-end attack. The highs, mids and lows all sound very open to provide a musically warm and vibrant tone.
The 45 degree bearing edge is a very common cut, featuring a sharp 1-ply thick edge close to the outside of the shell. Sharper bearing edges tend to produce more attack and sustain. This generally results in a more lively, modern sound. This is due to there being less contact between the drumhead film and the shell itself.
A sharp, 45-degree also produces considerable more harmonic overtones, leading to a brighter sounding drum.
